Situated atop a limestone hill above the Vistula River, it served as the seat of Polish kings from the 14th century and remains a masterpiece reflecting Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Its iconic Renaissance arcaded courtyard is among the finest in Europe. Today, the castle functions as a major art museum with ten curatorial departments, showcasing collections of paintings, sculpture, Sigismund II Augustus’s world‑famous tapestries, arms and armour, Meissen porcelain, artistic crafts, and the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. As part of the Historic Centre of Kraków, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 and ranks among the most visited museums in the country.
